Shannie, New Orleans

My mom taught me - and continues to teach me- that every day is precious.

Don't wait to do all the things you want to do because tomorrow may be too late (in other words, eat dessert first).

Most recently, I've noticed that she's started drinking champagne instead of plain old wine at every opportunity.

"Always buy good shoes."

My mother felt strongly about investing in fine shoes. An inexpensive t-shirt? Why not. Save your money for the well-made footwear. Even when I was still in braces with an awkward haircut, I knew to look for "Made in Italy" or "Made in France" at the bottom of a shoe. They're our feet, after all. They take us places. We should take care of them.
